Spiritualism is a Philosophy, Science and Religion based on the belief of the continuous existence of the Spirit or Soul, even after physical death and the ability to communicate with them.
Aspects of this Philosophy date right back into the very early ages of mankind's history. Emma Harding Britten, the most renowned and most respected advocate and proponent in the early Modern Spiritualist Movement proposed principles that applied to Spiritualism and it is a modern form that is followed by our Spiritualist friends today.
The majority of Spiritualists are people who at some time were part of an orthodox religion and discovered that the knowledge presented was very limited and left them with many questions.
Spiritualism has "Seven Principles" that act as guidelines. They are open to personal interpretation.
1. The Fatherhood of God
2 The Brotherhood of Man
3. The communication of spirit and the ministry of angels.
4. The continuous existence of the human soul
5. Personal Responsibility
6. Compensation and Retribution for all good and evil deeds done on earth
7. Eternal progress open to every human soul.
Do we believe in reincarnation?
This is up to the individual person. Some Spiritualists do and some don't.
Do we provide the normal services of a church?
Yes we do. We hold regular church services and all of our ministers are able to perform baby namings, spiritual namings and dedication, funerals, memorials and commitment services. Those who are authorised can perform marriage ceremonies.
Do we believe in God?
Yes we do. Our first principle is the Fatherhood of God. Each person has to right to perceive God in their own way.
Do we believe in Jesus?
Yes as a Master Healer, teacher and medium. He demonstrated by example, compassion and service to mankind.
Do we say the Lord's Prayer in our services?
This is up to the discretion of the minister of the church. Most churches will either say or sing the Lord's Prayer or the Millenium Prayer.
Do we have set dogma or ritual?
No. Everyone is free to practice their belief in their own way. We endeavour to live by the Seven Principles of Spiritualism.
Do we welcome questions?
Absolutely! This is the way we all learn.
Do all Spiritualists believe in exactly the same things?
No. Each one is free to find their own answers in their own way. One thing we all have in common is a belief in God (by whatever name you would use) and a belief in the continued existence of the soul/spirit.
What is the format of a church service?
There is a general format which is subject to change in different churches. The service will start with a welcome to those attending and to the visiting medium. This is followed by an opening song, opening prayer and a reading from a spiritual book. Many churches include hands on healing in the service, but not all do this. Meditation is often included as part of the service. The medium will give an address or a talk, which may be channelled or prepared ahead of time. The medium will give a demonstration of what we call "proof of servival" This means being drawn to a particular person and giving a description of a loved one who has died in the physical world - be that a physical description, their name or personality and a brief message of upliftment.
Can anyone attend?
Yes. Our services are open to people of all faiths and belief. We respect the right of each individual to believe or not believe in accordance with their own belief system. We endeavour to provide a safe and caring environment for all who walk through the door.
Does everyone receive a message from the medium?
Not as a general rule. The medium will quite often stay after the service if someone needs to speak with them.
Can you refuse to receive a message?
Yes. Not everyone feels that they want to receive a message. Before the medium comes to you they should ask your permission. You can say no.
Would someone be given information that was embarrasing?
No. The medium would generally be sensitive to the privacy of the individual and deliver the message in a way that no-one else would understand or they may ask to see them after the service.
Do we believe that only human beings have a soul/spirit?
All life is sacred. Everything has a soul - all creatures great and small. All should be treated with kindness and respect. To harm one is to harm the self and all others.
